Alphabet, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft reported quarterly results within minutes of each other, and estimates of their combined 2026 capital spending rose to as much as $725 billion. Meta lifted its capex plan to as much as $145 billion and its shares fell more than 6%. Alphabet reported $20 billion of cloud revenue against an $18.4 billion forecast and a backlog above $460 billion, and its shares gained 6.6% in late trading. Amazon's cloud unit grew 28% and Microsoft guided to about 40% Azure growth.
Why it matters for listed companies
Hyperscaler capex is revenue for chip designers, memory makers, server and networking vendors, and for the utilities, power-equipment makers and contractors building data-centre capacity. The same spending weighs on the spenders' free cash flow, which is why investors rewarded Alphabet's visible cloud payoff and sold Meta after it raised its budget.

The finance angle is the contracted revenue: about $36 billion over the initial terms of the leases, paid by the AI cloud companies and hyperscalers that rent the capacity. That backlog is many times current revenue…
The finance angle is where AI work gets paid for. A model that runs on the laptop shifts spending from cloud usage to the device: Nvidia earns from the chip, Microsoft from the hardware and Windows, and the buyer pays…
The finance angle is the price of AI computing for the companies that buy it. Anthropic puts the overall cost of running a workload about 75% below Haiku 4.5, and says the Sonnet change takes roughly 20% off a typical…
The Dow fell about three times as much as the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, so the day's weakness sat more with older industrial and financial names than with the large technology companies that dominate the other two…
