What is an IPO lock-in period?

A period after listing during which certain shareholders cannot sell. SEBI sets the durations: anchor investors are locked for 30 days on half their allocation and 90 days on the rest, pre-IPO shareholders for six months, and promoters for six or eighteen months depending on the portion.

When does the anchor lock-in expire?

Half of an anchor allocation unlocks 30 days after allotment and the remainder at 90 days. The two-tranche split was introduced in 2021; before that the entire anchor book unlocked together.

Does a lock-in expiry mean the share price will fall?

Not necessarily. An expiry means a quantity of shares becomes sellable, not that anyone sells. Sometimes a tranche unlocks and nothing happens. It is a supply event with a known date, which is a fact — what follows is not.

How long is the promoter lock-in?

Eighteen months for the 20% minimum contribution, reduced from three years in 2022, and six months for any holding above that minimum.

When shares held by anchor investors, pre-IPO shareholders and promoters become sellable. These dates are fixed by regulation at allotment, so they are knowable months ahead — the most predictable supply events in a newly listed company's life.

An expiry is a supply event, not a forecast. It means a quantity of shares becomes sellable. Whether anyone sells, and what that does to a price, is not something this page claims to know.

How these dates are worked out

Every date here is derived from the issue's allotment date and the periods SEBI sets in the ICDR regulations. Nothing is scraped, which means nothing here can go stale because a source changed — but it also means the dates are only as good as the allotment date we hold.

Where an allotment date is missing we count from two working days before listing, which is the usual gap, and the per-company page says so explicitly rather than presenting an estimate as a fact.

Two of these periods changed recently: the anchor lock-in was split into 30-day and 90-day tranches in 2021, and promoter minimum contribution was cut from three years to eighteen months in 2022. Older explanations of this subject are simply wrong about both.
