Brent rises to $107 a barrel after Iran-Gulf talks on reopening Hormuz are postponed and Saudi sites are hit

US Energy Industrials Materials

What happened

Brent futures rose 2.5% to $107.18 a barrel on Monday, after gaining almost 9% the week before, following new strikes on Saudi Arabia and on ships in the Gulf and an attack on a Saudi oil pipeline. A meeting in Oman between Iran and Gulf Arab states on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, planned for that day, was postponed. Brent had moved above $100 the previous Wednesday for the first time since July 24. Oman crude for November delivery rose $5.73 to $127.62.

Why it matters for listed companies

Crude back above $100 raises selling prices for US oil producers and, with a lag, fuel costs for airlines, trucking and shipping companies, cruise lines and chemical and plastics makers that use oil-based feedstock. The report notes diesel, gasoline and jet fuel prices remain well above pre-war levels, which reaches households directly. For US-listed companies the exposure runs mainly through price, not physical supply, since the barrels at risk move through the Gulf to Asia and Europe.
