US shares pulled back on October 7, a day after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.66% to 51,179.87, the S&P 500 fell 0.22% to 7,801.77 and the Nasdaq Composite 0.22% to 27,538.69. The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.36% and the 30-year at 5.66%, both the highest since 2002, as the Fed's minutes pointed to another rate increase by year-end. Nvidia and AMD each slipped less than 1% from all-time highs, and bitcoin fell to about $83,000.
Why it matters for listed companies
The Dow fell about three times as much as the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, so the day's weakness sat more with older industrial and financial names than with the large technology companies that dominate the other two indexes. Treasury yields at 24-year highs raise the cost of mortgages, corporate bonds and government borrowing, and lift the return available on bonds relative to shares. Oil near $100 a barrel adds to the inflation worry behind the bond selling. Levi Strauss and Applied Digital reported results after the close.
