The European Central Bank raised its three key interest rates by 25 basis points, taking the deposit facility rate to 2.25% from 2.0%, the main refinancing rate to 2.40% and the marginal lending rate to 2.65%. It was the first increase since September 2023. Euro-area inflation reached 3.2% in May, the highest since September 2023, with core inflation at 2.5%. Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel warned that the risk of inflation expectations becoming de-anchored was rising, and markets priced roughly a 50% chance of another hike in September.
Why it matters for listed companies
Higher policy rates widen deposit and lending margins at euro-area banks such as BNP Paribas, Santander, UniCredit and ING, but raise funding costs for leveraged sectors including real estate, utilities and private-equity-owned companies, and push up mortgage rates for households already squeezed by fuel and gas bills. A tighter ECB also supports the euro, which reduces the value of foreign earnings when exporters convert them back into euros.
