Ryanair reported profit after tax of €538m for the quarter to 30 June, down 34% from a year earlier. Passengers rose 6% to 61.3 million and revenue edged up 1% to €4.38bn, but operating costs rose 11% to €3.81bn, driven by the 20% of jet fuel it had not hedged plus higher staff and maintenance costs. Average fares fell 6%. The airline linked weaker pricing to the Middle East conflict, citing consumer hesitancy, worries about jet fuel shortages and shorter booking windows, and said it was too early to give full-year profit guidance.
Why it matters for listed companies
Ryanair is Europe's largest low-cost carrier by passengers, so its fares and fuel bill are a read on the short-haul market that easyJet, Wizz Air and the low-cost arms of IAG, Lufthansa and Air France-KLM also sell into. The exposure runs through two lines: ticket revenue, where shorter booking windows reduce pricing visibility, and jet fuel, the largest variable cost, where the unhedged share is bought at spot prices. Airports and travel retailers are affected through passenger volumes, which were still growing in the quarter.
