European shares were higher through Tuesday's session, with the STOXX 600 up about 0.4% near 636 points in early afternoon, a third day of gains. French 10-year yields fell 15.3 basis points to 4.708% and the German 10-year 4.6 points to 3.45%; the gap between them narrowed to 125 basis points after touching 158.67, the widest since 2011. The euro recovered 0.39% to $1.1260. Reuters said markets price an 80% chance of one more ECB rate increase this year, where three had been priced.
Why it matters for listed companies
The move in French debt matters most to banks and insurers that hold it and to French companies whose borrowing costs follow the sovereign; it reverses part of the sell-off that took the CAC 40 to a six-month low on Monday. Fewer expected ECB increases lower the rate path for property and utilities and trim the margin outlook for lenders. Among single stocks at midday, Sartorius rose about 7% and defence group QinetiQ fell about 5.6%; the reasons for those two moves could not be confirmed from the reports read. These are intraday figures, not the close.
