Supreme Court rules 5-4 that Fed governor Lisa Cook can stay in her job while her firing case proceeds

US Financials

What happened

Writing for a 5-4 majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said the Federal Reserve is a uniquely structured entity whose governors can be removed only for cause, after notice and an opportunity to respond, which Trump's social-media announcement did not provide. Cook stays on the board while lower courts examine the mortgage-related allegations against her, which she denies. The court separately ruled 6-3 to end removal protections for officials at agencies such as the FTC and NLRB.

Why it matters for listed companies

The ruling limits a president's ability to reshape the Fed board quickly, which bears on the inflation credibility of US monetary policy and on the extra yield investors require on long-term Treasuries. Bond markets, banks and rate-sensitive sectors are the most exposed to any erosion of Fed independence. The separate decision on other agencies strengthens White House control over regulators that police antitrust, labour and consumer rules for listed companies.
