What happened

Amazon's second-quarter net sales rose 20% to $200.6 billion. Amazon Web Services revenue was $42.2 billion, up 37% from $30.9 billion a year earlier, its fifth consecutive quarter of faster growth, and AWS operating income rose 64% to $16.6 billion. The AWS backlog of customer agreements grew to $496 billion. Chief executive Andy Jassy said the company plans $220 billion of capital expenditure in 2026, up from a prior estimate of $200 billion, and that it still lacks enough capacity to meet demand. Free cash flow was negative $7.6 billion.

Why it matters for listed companies

Amazon's capex plan of $220 billion for 2026, $20 billion more than before, is the largest single-company figure among the cloud providers and turned free cash flow to negative $7.6 billion from an $18.2 billion inflow a year earlier. The return side is AWS: $42.2 billion of quarterly revenue at a 39.4% operating margin and a $496 billion backlog. The spending flows to suppliers of chips, servers, power and construction.
