Delta's June-quarter fuel bill jumps 77% to $4.4 billion, yet it keeps its 2026 profit guidance

US Industrials Energy

What happened

Delta Air Lines reported adjusted June-quarter operating revenue of $17.7 billion, up 14% from a year earlier, and adjusted pre-tax income of $1.4 billion, a 7.7% margin. Adjusted fuel expense was $4.4 billion, up 77%, at $3.93 a gallon, 75% more than a year before. Adjusted earnings were $1.56 a share. For the September quarter it guided to revenue growth in the mid-teens, an operating margin of 11% to 13% and earnings of $2.00 to $2.50 a share, and it affirmed full-year adjusted earnings of $6.50 to $7.50 a share.

Why it matters for listed companies

Delta is the first big US airline to report each season, so its numbers are read across the group. They show the mechanism at work in the sector: jet fuel, the largest variable cost, rose by about three quarters, and the carrier offset it with 14% revenue growth on roughly 1% more capacity. Airlines with weaker pricing or less premium and loyalty revenue have less room to absorb the same fuel cost. Refiners sit on the other side of that bill.
