Spirit Airlines began an orderly wind-down on May 2 and cancelled all flights after talks with the Trump administration on a $500 million cash infusion, in exchange for a potential stake, failed to produce a deal. The ultra-low-cost carrier had filed for bankruptcy twice since 2024 and was squeezed by jet fuel prices that soared during the Iran war. Its share of US passengers had fallen to 3.9% in February from 5.1% a year earlier, according to Cirium.
Why it matters for listed companies
Spirit's exit removes a low-fare competitor from many leisure routes, giving larger listed carriers such as United, Delta, American, JetBlue and Frontier room to absorb its passengers, although several agreed to cap fares for stranded travellers. Aircraft lessors and airports with heavy Spirit exposure lose a customer. Consumer advocates quoted by NPR argued that fares on former Spirit routes could go up without it.
