US GDP growth slows to 1.5% in the second quarter while the PCE price index rises 5.1%

US Consumer Discretionary Industrials Financials

What happened

The advance estimate put real GDP growth at a 1.5% annual rate in April to June, down from 2.1% in the first quarter. Consumer spending, investment and exports added to growth; government spending fell and imports rose. The PCE price index increased 5.1%, against 4.6% the quarter before, and the measure without food and energy rose 3.4%, against 4.4%. Real final sales to private domestic purchasers, which adds consumer spending and private fixed investment, rose 3.9% after 1.7%.

Why it matters for listed companies

The release gives two different readings for listed companies. Private demand, the part that drives sales at retailers, travel firms, manufacturers and lenders, grew 3.9%, faster than the headline. The slowdown came from government spending and from weaker growth in investment and exports, which bears on contractors and exporters. Prices rising at 5.1% bear on every company through input costs and through interest rates, since PCE is the inflation gauge the Federal Reserve targets.
