US inflation holds at 3.4% in August as gasoline jumps 3.9% and airline fares rise 2.7%

What happened

The consumer price index rose 0.4% in August after a 0.1% gain in July, and was 3.4% higher than a year earlier. Gasoline rose 3.9% after two monthly declines and made up more than a third of the increase. Excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.3% in the month and 2.4% over the year; airline fares climbed 2.7% as jet fuel costs rose. Food prices rose 0.1% and grocery prices were unchanged. After the report, markets priced about a 91% chance of a Federal Reserve rate increase the following week.

Why it matters for listed companies

The August numbers show energy costs moving back into consumer prices after the summer dip: gasoline directly, and air fares through jet fuel. That is revenue for refiners and for airlines able to pass fuel costs on, and a squeeze on households' other spending at retailers and restaurants. Grocery prices were flat, so food retailers and packaged-food makers saw no pricing lift. With core inflation at 2.4%, the pressure was concentrated in energy-linked items, not spread across goods and services.
