Dutch paint maker AkzoNobel agreed to sell its decorative paints businesses in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Papua New Guinea and Australia to Japan's Nippon Paint Holdings for $1.35 billion. The businesses had 2025 revenue of $291 million and EBITDA of $65 million, a margin of about 22%. The Indonesian sale is due to close in late 2026 and the rest around mid-2027, subject to regulatory approval. Nippon Paint is paying with cash and bank borrowings and is issuing no new shares.
Why it matters for listed companies
The price is about 21 times the units' 2025 EBITDA, a high multiple for a paints business, and AkzoNobel's shares rose 2.3% on the news; Nippon Paint closed 3.45% higher in Tokyo. For AkzoNobel it turns a small, profitable regional business into cash while it reshapes its portfolio. For Nippon Paint it is a partial result: its earlier proposal for all of AkzoNobel's decorative paints, valued at about €7.5 billion, was rejected. The deal adds to consolidation in Asia-Pacific coatings, where Nippon Paint already competes with regional and Indian paint makers; the report gives no figures for the effect on rivals.
