Microsoft announced Maia 300, the third generation of its in-house AI chip, made by TSMC, with large-scale deployment from 2027. Azure chief Scott Guthrie said Maia will become the primary AI inference system for Microsoft products. Microsoft claims 40% more AI output per unit of power than leading GPU systems. Maia is not offered to outside customers.
Why it matters for listed companies
Every inference workload Microsoft moves onto its own chips is spending that would otherwise go to Nvidia and AMD GPUs; Evercore ISI estimates Maia at about 10% of Microsoft's AI chip spending by early 2027. TSMC earns the manufacturing work either way. Microsoft says the shift could save it billions of dollars.

The finance angle is the contracted revenue: about $36 billion over the initial terms of the leases, paid by the AI cloud companies and hyperscalers that rent the capacity. That backlog is many times current revenue…
The finance angle is where AI work gets paid for. A model that runs on the laptop shifts spending from cloud usage to the device: Nvidia earns from the chip, Microsoft from the hardware and Windows, and the buyer pays…
The finance angle is the price of AI computing for the companies that buy it. Anthropic puts the overall cost of running a workload about 75% below Haiku 4.5, and says the Sonnet change takes roughly 20% off a typical…
