2026 monsoon ends about 13% below normal, the weakest since 2015, with the south and east hit hardest

What happened

IMD said the June-September southwest monsoon closed with a 12.6% all-India deficit: 759.4 mm against a normal of 868.6 mm, the lowest since 2015. South India got 76% of its long-period average and the east 74%. East and Northeast India had their lowest rainfall since 1901. Kharif sowing reached about 110.7 million hectares, only 1.2% below last year. Southern reservoirs were at 50% of live storage against 79% nationally. IMD sees October and October-December rain below normal, with El Nino peaking in November.

Why it matters for listed companies

Farm incomes drive rural spending, the main demand channel for FMCG makers, two-wheeler and tractor manufacturers, and agrochemical and fertiliser companies. Kharif acreage held up close to last year, which cushions the first-order hit. The bigger exposure is the rabi season and southern states, where reservoirs are low. Low reservoir levels also matter for hydropower output and irrigation-linked power demand in those states. Weaker crops can also feed food inflation, which is relevant to the RBI's rate decision.
