Share Buybacks
2 tracked · updated 19 Sept 2026, 1:29 am IST
A buyback is a company purchasing its own shares back from shareholders, usually at a price above the market. Only shares held on the record date are eligible, and the proportion actually accepted depends on how many shareholders tender.

Questions
What is the record date for a buyback?
The date on which you must hold the shares in your demat account to be eligible to tender them. Buying after the record date does not make you eligible for that buyback.
Will all my tendered shares be accepted?
Not necessarily. If more shares are tendered than the company is buying, acceptance is proportionate, with a reserved portion for small shareholders. The final acceptance ratio is published after the offer closes.
