Axis Bank's provisional update for the quarter to September 30 shows gross advances of Rs 13.85 lakh crore, up 22.7% from a year earlier and 8.8% from June, and deposits of Rs 14.52 lakh crore, up 20.7% and 5.8%. Low-cost current and savings balances grew 10.6% to Rs 5.30 lakh crore while term deposits grew 27.3% to Rs 9.23 lakh crore. The bank raised Rs 1.02 lakh crore of FCNR(B) deposits; without loans at international branches, advances growth would have been 18.8%.
Why it matters for listed companies
Two things stand out for bank earnings. Growth is being funded mostly by term and foreign-currency deposits, which cost more than savings balances, so the share of cheap deposits is falling and that weighs on the lending margin. And about four percentage points of the loan growth came from international branches rather than domestic lending. With HDFC Bank, Yes Bank and Central Bank of India also reporting double-digit growth, the quarter's updates show credit demand holding up ahead of the RBI's rate decision on October 7. These are unaudited figures; profit numbers come with the results.
