Brent crude fell about 5% to around $82 a barrel on June 15 after the US and Iran announced a peace agreement. Under-recovery on petrol at public sector oil marketing companies dropped to Rs 3 a litre, nearly half the Rs 6 a week earlier, and on diesel to Rs 27 from Rs 30 on June 8, while losses on domestic LPG stayed around Rs 700 a cylinder. Pump prices had been raised by Rs 7.38 a litre for petrol and Rs 7.52 for diesel since May 15, with Delhi petrol at Rs 102.12.
Why it matters for listed companies
Cheaper crude directly narrows losses at IOC, BPCL and HPCL, whose earnings swing with the gap between pump prices and international product costs; diesel and LPG remain loss-making, so their recovery is partial. Lower oil also eases input costs for paint, tyre, plastics and chemical makers and airlines, trims India's import bill and supports the rupee, while upstream producers such as ONGC and Oil India realise less per barrel.
