Brent touches $126, a four-year high, as US-Iran talks stall; rupee slides to 95.34 and Sensex sheds 583 points

IN Oil Gas & Consumable Fuels Chemicals Services Automobile and Auto Components

What happened

Brent futures spiked above $126 a barrel, the highest since 2022, before easing below $114, as the US and Iran showed no sign of resuming talks and reports of possible US strikes threatened the ceasefire; Brent is up 47% since the conflict began. The Sensex closed 583 points lower at 76,914 and the Nifty at 23,998, and the rupee touched 95.34 a dollar before intervention. April was still the best month since December 2023: Sensex +6.9%, Nifty +7.5%, Smallcap 100 +18.4%. Adani Enterprises (+36.9%) and Adani Ports (+26.3%) led; HCL Technologies (-10.6%) lagged.

Why it matters for listed companies

India imports most of its crude, so a spike of this size widens the import bill and current-account deficit, weakens the rupee and lifts fuel and petrochemical costs. State-run fuel retailers such as IOC, BPCL and HPCL absorb losses while pump prices are held, and airlines, paint, tyre, plastics and chemical makers face higher input costs. IT and pharma exporters get some cushion from the weaker rupee.
