Ahead of the RBI rate panel's Oct 5-7 meeting, Crisil ran rate-hike scenarios on the companies it rates. Median gearing is about 0.5. A 25 bp increase trims median interest coverage by roughly 10 bp to 5.1 times, and a 50 bp increase by roughly 20 bp to 5.0 times. Crisil sees bank credit growing 14.5-15.5% in FY27.
Why it matters for listed companies
The channel is interest cost. With low leverage, most rated borrowers lose little coverage even in the 50 bp case, so the direct effect on corporate credit quality is small. Crisil singles out commercial real estate as open to a moderate impact, calls infrastructure relatively resilient, and flags MSME and retail lending as areas for banks and NBFCs to track. For lenders the read-through is on loan repricing and on asset quality in those books rather than on large corporates.
