Foreign portfolio selling of Rs 60,847 crore in April lifts 2026's net equity outflow to Rs 1.92 trillion

IN Financial Services Information Technology

What happened

Foreign portfolio investors were net sellers of Rs 60,847 crore ($6.5 billion) of Indian equities in April, following a record Rs 1.17 trillion outflow in March, taking net selling in the first four months of 2026 to Rs 1.92 trillion. Analysts tied the selling to escalating West Asia tensions that pushed crude above $100 a barrel and revived inflation worries. Domestic institutional investors have bought around Rs 1.7 trillion so far this year.

Why it matters for listed companies

Sustained foreign selling weighs most on large, foreign-owned stocks such as private banks, IT services companies and other index heavyweights, and adds pressure on the rupee. Domestic mutual fund and insurance buying has absorbed much of the supply, limiting index damage but leaving valuations more dependent on local flows. Outflows on this scale also raise the cost of equity for companies planning IPOs, QIPs or promoter stake sales.
