Oil marketing companies raised petrol by Rs 2.61 and diesel by Rs 2.71 a litre on Monday, the fourth increase in under two weeks after Rs 3 on May 15, 90 paise on May 19 and 87-91 paise on May 23. Since May 15 petrol is up Rs 7.38 a litre and diesel Rs 7.52; non-branded petrol in Delhi crossed Rs 100 to Rs 102.12, with diesel at Rs 95.20. The companies' under-recovery on petrol, diesel and LPG fell to under Rs 600 crore a day. Crude, at $60-70 before the conflict, was around $106.
Why it matters for listed companies
The increases shrink daily losses at state-run fuel retailers IOC, BPCL and HPCL, which had been selling below cost, but pass the oil shock on to households and businesses. Diesel drives freight costs for FMCG, cement and auto distribution, dearer fuel can dent two-wheeler and car demand, and higher pump prices feed retail inflation, narrowing the RBI's room to ease. Private fuel retailers also get pricing headroom once state retailers move.
