IndiaMART data shows polypropylene up 32% and TMT steel up 13% between July and September as the oil shock reaches raw materials

What happened

Seller-quoted prices on the IndiaMART B2B marketplace, in its September Marketplace Insights, show polypropylene granules rising 32% between July and September, from Rs 95 to Rs 125 a kg. TMT steel bars rose 13% to about Rs 55,362 a tonne, MS pipes and stretch film about 8% each, PET bottles were flat and cotton fabric fell 8%. India's crude import basket touched $117 a barrel on September 21, while oil companies have been absorbing about Rs 8-9 a litre at the pump, roughly Rs 530 crore a day. IndiaMART's founder said the increase is concentrated in plastics-chain products tied to crude.

Why it matters for listed companies

Retail fuel prices have been held, so the oil shock is reaching companies through what they buy rather than at the pump. Plastics processors, packaging makers and consumer goods companies that use polypropylene and film for packaging face higher input costs, while polymer producers sell into those higher prices. Builders and infrastructure contractors pay more for TMT bars and pipes, which is a revenue gain for steel makers. Textile companies are on the other side, with cotton fabric cheaper. These are marketplace quotes from mostly small sellers, not official wholesale price data, so they show direction rather than the exact cost increase facing large listed companies.
