RBI holds repo at 5.25% in first FY27 review, projects 6.9% growth and 4.6% inflation amid the West Asia war

IN Financial Services Realty Automobile and Auto Components

What happened

The Monetary Policy Committee left the repo rate at 5.25% and kept a neutral stance, with the standing deposit facility at 5.0% and the MSF and bank rate at 5.5%. It projected FY27 GDP growth at 6.9% (quarters: 6.8%, 6.7%, 7.0%, 7.2%) and CPI inflation at 4.6%, peaking at 5.2% in the October-December quarter. The pause under Governor Sanjay Malhotra follows cumulative cuts of 125 bp in 2025, as the West Asia conflict pushed up crude prices and weakened the rupee.

Why it matters for listed companies

A hold after 2025's easing leaves loan and deposit pricing broadly unchanged, so banks and NBFCs see little immediate margin shift while rate-sensitive borrowers in housing, autos and real estate get no fresh relief. The RBI's inflation path and the risks it flagged from higher energy prices, input shortages, shipping disruptions and weaker global demand signal that further easing is on hold for now, which matters for lenders' bond portfolios and for the valuations of interest-rate-sensitive stocks.
