Why it matters for listed companies
The close shows where a higher policy rate was priced first: capital-heavy metal producers (Hindalco, JSW Steel, Tata Steel) and borrowers' purchases such as vehicles and homes, where loan costs feed straight into demand. Lenders were mixed rather than weak - Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Bajaj Finance rose and the PSU bank index gained - because floating-rate loans reprice quickly. On the NSE 2,043 shares fell against 1,549 that rose, so the decline was broad but not a rout, and small caps ended higher.
