Monthly sales filings on October 1 showed: - Maruti Suzuki: 2,36,013 units in September, up 24.4%, with domestic sales up 36.5% - Mahindra & Mahindra: auto volumes up 15% to 1,14,874, but tractor sales down 21% - Hyundai Motor India: a record 77,916 units, up 10.8% - Bajaj Auto: total sales up 5% to 5,38,443, with exports up 32% and domestic sales down 9%
The data shows a split inside the sector. Passenger-vehicle makers posted growth in domestic sales. The tractor business, which depends on rural income, weakened in a deficient monsoon year. Two-wheeler domestic demand was soft for Bajaj, which leaned on exports. Auto-component suppliers' volumes follow these manufacturer volumes. Fuel prices, festive demand and any RBI rate move on October 7 add further variables for EMI-dependent buyers.
