Sitharaman says India-US trade talks have 'reached a plateau' and further compromise is difficult

What happened

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in New Delhi that negotiations on a broader trade agreement with the United States are at a stage where more concessions are hard to give. The open points she described are Washington's wish to narrow a trade balance that favours India, India's request for tariff rates no worse than those of peer countries, assurances against fresh penalties after a deal, and a US law that allows tariffs of up to 100% on large buyers of Russian energy.

Why it matters for listed companies

An interim agreement is already in place, so this is about the wider deal and the tariff rate Indian exporters end up with against competing countries. The companies exposed are export-heavy ones selling into the US, such as textile and apparel makers, and refiners that process Russian crude, which sit directly under the Russian-energy tariff clause. The comments follow the US trade representative's remark last week that a deal was close but not imminent; nothing has changed in the tariffs that apply today, so the direct effect for now is on expectations rather than on revenue.
