US nonfarm payrolls grew by 29,000 in September against the roughly 90,000 economists had pencilled in, and the unemployment rate moved up to 4.2% from 4.1%. Wage growth was 0.1% on the month and 3% on the year. Bond traders cut the odds of a Federal Reserve rate increase in October to about 16% from 64% a week earlier. The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.28%, below Thursday's 5.34% peak. On Friday the Dow closed up 0.49%, the S&P 500 up 0.73% and the Nasdaq up 1.19%. Indian markets were shut on Friday for Gandhi Jayanti.
Why it matters for listed companies
US yields and Fed pricing feed into foreign portfolio flows, the rupee and Indian bond yields, which is where banks, NBFCs and insurers are exposed through treasury books and borrowing costs. The RBI's own rate panel meets October 5-7, so the US data lands days before a domestic decision. For IT services exporters the reading cuts two ways: softer US rate pressure eases one worry for their clients, but a labour market adding 29,000 jobs a month is also a sign of a slowing economy in their largest market. Indian shares have not yet traded on this data; Monday is the first session after it.
