RBI raises repo rate 25 bps to 5.50% and moves to 'calibrated tightening'

IN Financial Services Realty Automobile and Auto Components

What happened

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee, meeting 5-7 October, voted unanimously to raise the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. The standing deposit facility rate is now 5.25% and the MSF rate 5.75%. The stance changed from neutral to calibrated tightening. The MPC put FY27 CPI inflation at 5.2% and GDP growth at 7.1%, and named crude oil, the monsoon and geopolitical tension as risks.

Why it matters for listed companies

A higher repo rate feeds through to bank lending and deposit rates. Lenders with floating-rate loan books reprice faster than their deposits at first, while NBFCs and housing-finance companies that borrow from markets face higher funding costs. Rate-sensitive demand, such as home loans for developers and vehicle loans for carmakers and two-wheeler makers, is exposed to dearer EMIs. Minutes come out on 21 October and the next meeting is 2-4 December.
