The Supreme Court upheld the Bombay High Court ruling that struck down the write-off of Rs 8,415 crore of YES Bank's additional tier-1 bonds during its March 2020 reconstruction. YES Bank shares fell about 15% on 15 October, their steepest one-day drop since July 2020. The bank said in 2023 that it had made no provision for the dispute, on legal advice.
Why it matters for listed companies
If YES Bank has to restore or compensate the bondholders, the liability lands on a bank that has not provided for it, which bears on its capital ratios and profit. The ruling also bears on how AT1 bonds are priced across Indian banks, since it limits how a write-down can be imposed in a rescue. The bank said it is studying the verdict.
