Simplified GST registration for sellers who trade only through e-commerce platforms goes live on 1 November

IN Consumer Services

What happened

Following the 57th GST Council meeting, an optional simplified registration under Rule 14B of the CGST Rules opens on the GST portal on 1 November. Sellers who sell only through e-commerce operators, already registered in one home state and passing on input tax credit of no more than ₹2.5 lakh a month, can register in other states using the platform's warehouse as their place of business, with the operator's consent.

Why it matters for listed companies

Small sellers no longer need an office in each state to stock goods in a marketplace's warehouses there, which lowers the cost of selling across states through online marketplaces and quick-commerce platforms. Listed platforms gain an easier route to wider seller assortments; the direct revenue effect on them is small. A separate committee will review the rule tying a buyer's input credit to the supplier's tax payment, with any change from 1 April.
